First Day of School

So today Monkey started grade 2. I can't believe that she's in grade 2 already; that in May she will be celebrating her First Communion. Where does the time go?

Don't you just love her posing? She's quite a little fashionista, and that poor backpack is almost bigger then her.

Monkey and Muffin waiting outside the school. Monkey is happy because her 2 BFF's are in her class. As of right now she is in a 1/2 split class, but all that can change when all the final numbers are tallied and they reorganize the classes.

And tonight Monkey`s soccer team played in the semi-finals. They lost 3 to 1 to the top seeded team but they played their hearts out. The girls played their  best game all season tonight. It was a tie game until close to the end. After the game we all headed to the club house to pick up trophies for the girls, we also picked up Muffin`s trophy as she missed her pick up when we were at the cottage.  She was so excited, she told us "This is my first trophy ever, it's all mine". So cute.

Each their Own Person

As the soccer season draws to a close for the girls' I'm reflecting on the differences in their abilities in sports.

When Monkey was young there was no questions about her learning to swim besides the fact that I was/am a swimmer, I feel it's an important life skill.  When she got to the age of starting group sports she decided she wanted to play soccer.

As a mom I just assumed that they would follow in my footsteps and do dance and swimming. Soccer, I don't know where that came from but soccer it was. (I think Rock may have been watching soccer because it was World Cup, and Monkey was watching with him. I can't knock that thinking because I was inspired to swim competitively from watching the Olympics).

Up until recently soccer for Monkey consisted of picking flowers, cloud watching, kicking dirt around and fooling around with other players.

Recently she has been paying more attention and isn't afraid of the ball. She's actually fighting for the ball when there if a group of them going for it. She's also been playing some really good defense. I'm so proud of her improvements and accomplishments.

She is also a good swimmer from the start. She fast tracked through the levels, currently she is the youngest one in her level.  She's good at that but then you have Muffin.

This year was Muffin's first year in everything, swimming lessons and soccer.  Last year the girls didn't so much (except Monkey did swimming). In January when she turned 3 she started swimming lessons (that's when the YMCA starts formal lessons without the parents). and this summer was her first time playing soccer.

Muffin is a natural athlete.  It took a while for her to get use tot he water since she didn't get to spend as much time in the pool (like we did with Monkey due to life getting in the way) but now she's doing better then Monkey was at that age.

And soccer, she's a natural. You put her in any position and she dominates it. I'm actually surprised at how well she does. Her first game ever she was playing goalie and after stopping the ball, instead of throwing the ball out she ran the ball down the field and attempted to score a goal.

I know that each child is different but I didn't expect such differences in their abilities. I am proud of both my girls and their accomplishments. hey always try their best and I think that's what they should strive for.  It doesn't matter if they are soccer starts or the supporting players. Every role is needed on a team. How boring would the would be if only the people that excelled at something did it?

The girls are active and having fun, and that's important especially this day and age when children aren't as active as they use to be.  Now I wonder what to expect from Tutu as he grows up. It will be interested to see what everyone excels a and what everyone enjoys.

A to Z and Everything in Between

I haven’t been around much lately because I’ve been having a hard time juggling all the balls in my life. The girls just started soccer and for the past 3 weeks we had 2 games a week for Monkey and 1 game for Muffin. On top of it, it seems like I have injured myself so last week I didn’t do any swimming. I have a pain behind my right shoulder blade that feels worse when I raise my arm. I’m going to get into physio this week to have that taken care of because I need to be ready for my race in September. Better it happens now then closer to the race (all though that said, if this was close to the race I would just swim through it and deal with it after).

Speaking of not dealing with things, I need to learn to better manage my hypothyroidism. I’m really bad with taking the meds so I can feel better. The problem is I need to take the pills at least half an hour before eating in the morning. Mornings around here are so crazy that I’m at work when I realize that I forgot to take my pills. I think I’m just going to stick the bottle in the bathroom and take them first thing. I’ve never kept them in the bathroom because apparently the heat and humidity in there can make them less effective. But less effective is better than not taking them at all.

I did manage to get some crafts in the last week. I used my friend’s machine to embroider a name on to a baby blanket for my cousin who is expecting a boy in August. I also hand embroidered the baby’s name on a sleeper as well. I created an obi inspired belt that is reversible and a chunky bead fabric covered necklace. I hope to have tutorials up this week for the last two. They were both quick and easy and look super cute.

I’m just curious how do others deal with the working, housework, working out, me time and enjoying the nice weather with the kids juggling act? Right now working, working out (before work) and enjoying the nice weather with the kids are winning. That said if our wifi connection reached the part of the backyard the kids like to play in I would be able to sneak in some me time too.
